Self Care & Self Discipline – Take Care of Yourself First
Self Care & Self Discipline, two of the terms are separate vehicles on their own, but when we dig deeper into it, we find a much integral relationship between each other. Before mapping out prescriptive steps, let us know what Self-Care and Self-Discipline are all about.
Self Care – What is Self Care?
Self Care is all about taking care of yourself at multiple levels of existence – Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual.
When basic human needs are met, that is, eating nutritious food, exercising, rest, and restoration, it builds the foundational abilities to persevere and manage stress better. On the mind level, meditating, reflecting, journaling, and doing work that fulfills you enables you to have a detached level of awareness of emotions, embrace them gracefully, and attain inner enrichment.
How is this related to your Self-Discipline?
Self-Discipline is the ability to motivate yourself to take purposeful actions, make conscious choices, and remain determined to consistently work on your goals, even when you don’t “feel” like it. One has to keep motivating oneself to keep going despite roadblocks, detours, and occasional pitfalls.
Example: Stopping yourself from checking social media and keeping yourself focused on your work requires self-discipline. However, the power of self-discipline can be channeled only when we have sufficient mental clarity, focus, and energy. This cannot happen unless we have the foundational aspects of self-care. Thus, taking care of yourself is the bedrock that helps you attain self-discipline, thereby boosting your confidence, courage, focus, clarity, and productivity.
Self-Care requires actively breaking old patterns and creating new patterns that steadily bring profound changes.
Here are some activities that you can commit to in order to build the habit of Self-Care:
- Health – Nourishing food, exercising, and sufficient sleep help energize you, boost confidence, clarity, concentration, strengthen your immune system, and prevent diseases.
- Mental Well-Being – Meditating for 20 minutes a day, journaling, reflection, spending time in nature, and saying no reduce anxiety, depression, and confusion while sharpening your focus.
- Productivity – When you carve out time for self-care, your productivity increases automatically, and the benefits are cumulative.
- Self-Discipline – A routine of self-care helps increase your mental and physical reserves, leading to greater self-control and consistency. It becomes easier to avoid destructive habits when we feel nourished.
The Action Plan:
- Physical: Mindful Eating, Exercise, Sleep
- Mental: Meditation, Reflection, Journaling, and Gratitude
- Relational: Nurturing Personal Relationships
- Spiritual: Activities that provide meaning and purpose
So thereby we can say that if we take up one daily ritual for each part of our day—morning, afternoon, and evening—we begin taking initiative and gradually witness positive changes in our holistic well-being. After all, transformation doesn’t happen by suddenly running a marathon. It starts with sitting upright from your couch and consistently doing the small things every day.
